Many looking for alternatives on council

[Recently] the State of Maryland certified the Nov. 2 general election. Not surprisingly, all nine seats on the Montgomery County Council were won by Democrats. One would have to go as far back as the election of 2002 to find a seat won by a non-Democrat (Republican Howard A. Denis defeated Duchy Trachtenberg in District 1). Since 2002, 26 of the 27 council campaigns have been captured by Democratic candidates. Many voters, not least of all me, were surprised by the final vote count for the at-large council seats.

Although all four seats will be again occupied by Democrats, a large number of county voters decided that this was the year to consider a third party candidate as an alternative. In the 2009 special election, I was privileged to receive the votes of 403 of my District 4 neighbors. Today, I'd like to thank the 16,358 citizens of Montgomery County who cast votes for me for an at-large seat on the council. During the course of the campaign, I learned a great deal from speaking with citizens, both those whom I believe voted for me and those I'm confident did not.

George Gluck, Rockville

The writer was the 2010 Green Party Candidate for an at-large seat on the Montgomery County Council.

  2. ENVIRONMENT: Caring for and preserving our world

  3. EDUCATION:  Graduating the best-prepared students in the state

"I think it's healthy to have an infusion of new ideas and new people on a regular basis," said Phil Andrews, the longest-serving council member. --  Sept. 22, 2010 issue of the Gazette
